How can I remove bitumen from my wood floor

I am still getting comments on removing bitumen from wood floors. This is a problem I had myself. We (my wife and I) took the carpet up in our hallway intending to replace it. To my surprise, a beautiful parquet floor was revealed. After much persuasion, my wife agreed to not replacing the carpet but I had to agree to keeping the floor clean.

After years of being covered by carpets, the floor really needed a thorough clean, there being years of dust and grime and, in places, the bitumen used to stick the wood tiles down had seeped up between the tiles.. My first job then was to sweep the floor in order to remove the years of dust. My second job was to sweep the floor (again). By this time the floor was looking much better although still needed cleaning.

To do the cleaning, I got down on my hands and knees (I could do that in those days!) and using Scotchbrite (a non-abrasive scouring material) soaked in Heritage Woodcare scrubbed the floor, following the grain of the wood tiles. The scrubbing not only cleaned and polished the tiles but also removed the bitumen and the odd paint spot. The Scotchbrite needed to be reasonably damp so had not been wrung out and the floor was left quite damp so I buffed up using kitchen towel. This left the floor looking really good with a sheen rather than high shine.

To keep the floof clean and polished now, I use a squeegee mop (kept specifically for the floor), soaked in heritage, and just wipe. I need to give the floor a few minutes to dry thoroughly before walking on it. The floor looks really good after using my Heritage and needs only a sweep in between polishing to retain the sheen.

How do I rewax a wax jacket?

In my recent posts I have been telling you about Heritage Leathercare and its uses. This has coincided with a number of contacts I have had on rewaxing a wax jacket.

This is a comparatively simple task. Initially you may need to clean your jacket. If you do, I would suggest using a cloth soaked in soapy water and squeezed out such that it still contains a reasonable amount of water. Wipe areas where there is a buildup of marks and then ensure your jacket is totally dry. Now you are ready.

Take your tub of Heritage Leathercare and, using the sponge (provided), wipe over the surface, scraping it across the inside edge to remove any surplus polish and then just wipe, in circular motions, on your jacket. Ensure you cover the whole garment, taking special care that it is not left greasy such that the grease comes off on your other clothes.Where it is greasy, take a soft, clean cloth and buff it up to remove excess wax. The job is now done and your jacket will have that water resistant finish.

What is best for my leather jacket and boots?

In my recent posts I have told you about Heritage Leathercare and also how to use it on leather furniture, etc. In this post I will tell you about other uses for your Heritage Leathercare, in particular for clothing and footwear.

Heritage Leathercare is ideal for use on clothing, particularly Motor Bike Leathers, and as it is colourless, it can be used on any colour. Most leather jackets, trousers and skirts are either black or brown so your Heritage will also clean them as you apply it. Incidentally, I was demonstrating at a show recently and someone asked me if they could use Heritage on their leather underwear! Should your clothing be white or similar light colours, you may need to clean them first. Simply wipe over with a soapy cloth, paying special attention to areas where there is a buildup of marks. Ensure your leather is totally dry and you are then ready.

Take your sponge (provided) and wipe over the surface of your Heritage Leathercare, removing any surplus by wiping on the inside edge of your container. You then simply wipe your leather in circular motions, ensuring your leather is not greasy, if it is then just buff up using a clean and dry soft cloth.

Heritage Leathercare feeds, polishes, and protects your leather, leaving a water resistant finish. It is this latter property that ensures it's suitability for motor bike leathers.

Heritage Leathercare is also ideal for boots and shoes. Mr. N. from Dublin recently wrote to me and said "I want them for my barrister and solicitor who admired my shiny shoes at the courts recently.Hopefully you will have another two customers after tomorrow." Your Heritage will clean and polish your leather boots and shoes at the same time, keeping them soft and water resistant. Using it is very easy, you just load the sponge (provided) in the usual way and then wipe on your boots and shoes. It's ease of use makes it especially suitable for motor bike boots and knee length leather fashion boots.

Note: Heritage Leathercare is NOT recommended for use on suede, nubuck or nappa leathers.

Clean and polish leather furniture and car seats

Having introduced Heritage Leathercare, I will, in this post, tell you about using it on leather furniture, car seats and seating in other areas such as horse driven carriages.

Using it is easy and, (unless you are using it on light colours that need cleaning or other colours with a heavy buildup) requires no preparation. If you do need to clean your leather prior to using your Heritage, simply wash with pure soap (Simple soap, baby soap, soap flakes, etc.) and dry thoroughly. Take your tub and wipe the sponge (provided) across your Heritage, wiping it across the inside edge of the container also to remove any surplus. You are now ready for use and just wipe the Heritage on your leather in circular motions ensuring your leather is not left greasy.Only if your leather is greasy will you need to buff up using a dry cloth to do so.

Your Heritage will polish and protect your leather and will leave a water resistant finish.

What is best for my leather furniture

Having told you about Heritage Woodcare (sometimes known as Celtic Woodcare) I am now going to tell you about it's sister product Heritage Leathercare ( also sometimes known as Celtic Leathercare) Manufactured by Drigate Products in their Dublin facility, Heritage Leathercare is available in 250ml and 500 ml sizes.

Heritage Leathercare is based on a traditional 19th century leather balsam containing original old fashioned ingredients (including beeswax) well known in the trade for revitalising and protecting the leather (and indeed the stitching) used in leathercraft. Professionals, from bookbinders and boot makers through to upholsterers, working in leather testify to its tried and tested formula.

The results obtained with Heritage Leathercare are instantaneous and long lasting leaving old, tired leather revitalised and more supple and newer leather products with a shine and protection unsurpassed by modern polishes not containing our traditional ingredients. It is also one of the most economical leather products on the market today and is colourless so is suitable for any colour.

Heritage Leathercare is ideal for use on leather furniture and car seats, clothing including motorbike leathers, boots and shoes, bags and cases, indeed any leather product except for suede, nubuck and nappa leather.

Patio Garden Furniture - cleaning, polishing, preserving

I have been reading about patio furniture. Much of the cheaper patio furniture is made of plastic which is very easy to clean as you just wash it. It can, however, become brittle and unsafe.

Wood patio furniture lasts longer than plastic furniture but is usually more expensive, is less easy to clean and also needs more maintenance.

Much of the wood garden furniture is made of teak. Teak is a hard wood and as such is ideal for patio garden furniture. It does , however, weather to a silvery colour if mot regularly treated. Many people like this silvery effect, (I don't object to it myself) but if you treat the wood without sanding this off, it will turn black.

Heritage Woodcare is ideally suited to the regular maintenance of garden furniture. Any weathering must first be removed - a light sanding usually suffices. Take your Heritage. give your bottle a really good shake, pour some into a container, take any soft, clean cloth, soak it in your polish, squeeze and ring your cloth out, pour any remaining polish back into your bottle and you are now ready. All you do now is wipe, following the grain. Heritage Woodcare will clean and polish your wood at the same time, irrespective of the finish (matt or gloss) and, being oil based, will also help in the preservation of your wood.

cleaning my caravan

Well, I got up this morning to see snow on the ground again, admittedly only a dusting and the sun has soon melted that.

I have been telling you about Heritage Woodcare and how good it is at cleaning and polishing (furniture, wood floors, in the kitchen). Did you know it is excellent for use in your caravan and also the exterior of it also. It is ideal for use on your "lino" floor (use it the same as wood flooring but you may need to buff it up afterwards for safety reasons) and also on your wood/wood effect cupboards and doors.

Having cleaned and polished the inside of your caravan, you may want to clean and polish the outside. Wash the bodywork in the usual way in order to particularly remove grit and other bits that will scratch. Prepare your cloth in the usual way (see previous posts) and wipe. Being oil based, your Heritage will finish the cleaning process and polish your caravan at the same time

Keeping kitchens clean and grease free.

In my last post I told you about Heritage Woodcare (sometimes known as Celtic Woodcare) and said that in future posts I will tell you where to use it. I have already mentioned furniture. It is ideal for use on your furniture being able to clean ( including the removal of grease and grime, nicotine buildup, ring marks, etc.) and polish at the same time.

Heritage Woodcare is also ideal for use in your kitchen. Here it will remove all the buildup of grease and water marks particularly. Every time we cook we are releasing water and grease into the atmosphere. This then settles on cupboards, cooker hoods, even the floor. Regular washing of the floor keeps them clean and grease free, thus safe to walk on.

However, our cooker hoods don't necessarily get this regular washing and are prone to getting buildups of grease. This then hardens and can sometimes be difficult to remove. Using your Heritage can help. When preparing your cloth (see my previous post) having squeezed your cloth cloth out, do not ring it out but leave it reasonably damp, wipe over the cooker hood last thing at night. Do this for about a week and the oils in your Heritage will gradually penetrate the dried on grease meaning you will eventually just wipe it off.

Heritage Woodcare is also ideal for wiping over your cupboards, worksurfaces, etc. Regular use will keep these clean and grease free and prevent the buildup of water marks, etc. thus keeping your kitchen looking like new.

Heritage Woodcare, what it is and does. Remove white heat marks, ring marks, water marks

What a miserable day it is here, cloudy, overcast and generally unwelcoming, but it could be worse, at least it is not bitterly cold and raining. Enough of my moaning.

In my last post I told you how to remove bitumen from wood floors using Heritage Woodcare. Having mentioned Heritage, I thought I would tell you something about it, how to use it and what it does. In this post I am going to tell you about it and how to use it and in the following posts I will tell you (in some detail) where to use it and what it does.

Heritage Woodcare is an up to date product based on a tried and tested recipe that is centuries old and was known only by the grand masters of the furniture crafts. This constant striving for perfection in the preservation, cleaning and polishing of wooden furniture between rival grandmasters can still be seen today when looking at many priceless antiques and, in order, to get the desired results, these grandmasters would spend hours, sometimes days, working on a single item.

Few people today have the time, or the patience, of these grandmasters, so after much research, and backed up by modern technology, this centuries old recipe has been updated to produce Heritage Woodcare. which gives the same outstanding results in a fraction of the time

Heritage Woodcare is very easy to use. Take your bottle, give it a really good shake and pour some into a container. Take any soft, clean cloth, soak it in the polish, squeeze and wring your cloth out and then pour the polish remaining in your container back into your bottle. You are now ready!

To clean and polish your furniture you simply wipe, following the grain of the wood. Heritage Woodcare cleans and polishes your furniture at the same time, taking off the build-up of silicones, waxes, grease and grime restoring your furniture back to its original finish. Heavy build-ups of grease and grime may require more than one application. At the same time it will also renove most white heat marks, ring marks and water marks although again, more than one application may be needed.

Remove bitumen from wood floor

Recently I have received a number of enquiries about removing bitumen from wood flooring.

This is a job I had to when we took up the carpet in my hall at home. We were going to change the carpet but when I saw the floor I realised I could save myself some money. What we had was a hardwood parquet floor. As the carpet had been down for a number of years, the floor was quite dusty and needed a thorough clean.

To clean the floor we first had to sweep several times in order to pick up over 10 years worth of dust. This revealed that bitumen had been used as an adhesive and that, in places, it had seeped up between the tiles. At the time I was using Heritage Woodcare to clean the floor and discovered that by using Scotchbrite (a none scratch scouring pad) soaked in Heritage, I was able to remove this bitumen whilst cleaning the rest of the floor. Incidentally, the floor came up a real treat, with a slight sheen. In fact it looked so good that I was able to eventually persuade my wife to agree to me taking up the carpet in the lounge and reveal the parquet floor right through the downstairs.
